New Ministry Opportunities
SOAR is exploring the possibility of two new ministry opportunities. The first is what we call micro-economic enterprise. You may have heard of something similar in the news about making loans to entrepreneurs in other countries so they can start or expand their business. Well, our idea is similar, but with a Christian service perspective.
Recently we had some sewing machines donated to us and have delivered two to Jamaica and two to Mexico. Our thought is to make a loan to the ladies who receive the machines so they can be trained as seamstresses and work to support their families. We have been learning about this type of ministry opportunity and are looking for business men and women or other sponsors to partner with us. Working with the local missionary or minister, small loans would be made, sometimes as little as $50 to $100, to help an individual start a small business to support their family. The future vision would even include having business men and women travel to some of our international locations to help train individuals on starting or expanding a business. What an open door for ministry!
The second aspect of ministry we are exploring is in the area of mission electronic communication. Keith Bunn, minister at Tucker Christian Church, developed a great ministry to provide vital information about missions, ministries, and overall church information across the state of Georgia via e-mail. With his illness and passing, this communication ministry came to a sudden stop. We realized just how much we depended on his communication when our close friend, Cris Garcia - founder of the Bethshean Mexico Mission, was diagnosed with uterine cancer and came to the states for surgery and treatment. It wasn't until the last minute that most people knew of the prayer need. Our hope is to develop an electronic network for missionaries and ministries to keep supporters and prayer warriors informed about their work and what is going on the world of missions. This would include but not be limited to sending out electronic newsletters for missionaries and passing along vital prayer requests via e-mail.
Please keep these two new ministry opportunities in your prayers as we seek to expand the Kingdom work of SOAR Ministries. |

Understanding SOAR Finances
We are sometimes asked about contributions to SOAR and how the funds are used. We thought it would be good to clarify just how SOAR operates financially.
SOAR's goal is to facilitate short term missions by working with each team based on their particular needs. When SOAR provides complete facilitation for a mission the cost estimate includes a 5% fee which helps offset administrative costs. The fee does not, nor is it intended to, fully cover SOAR's expenses in facilitating the mission.
In addition to short term missions, SOAR is also involved in other mission projects such as Christmas Angel Tree and hurricane relief. One hundred percent of the funds received for these and other special projects goes directly to the designated project. SOAR does not retain any of these project funds for administrative costs.
Then how does SOAR operate financially? Our philosophy is to raise funds specifically for SOAR in order to support the ministry. SOAR receives regular support for the general fund from various churches, Sunday school classes, ladies groups, and individuals. These funds cover our travel expenses, insurance, administrative costs, convention expenses, training and promotional materials, and resource materials for the ministry and for the teams.
If you'd like to know more about how you or your group can support SOAR financially please contact us. |

Good Resources In January, 4 of us from SOAR had the opportunity to attend the National Short Term Mission Conference that was actually held here in Atlanta this year. This was our 4th year to attend the conference. The plenary speaker this year was Sarah Lanier of Youth With A Mission and she spoke of cultural awareness in short term missions. We were greatly encouraged by her sessions and got a great resource in her book Foreign to Familiar. We plan on using the book with our teams and if you are looking for a great way of understanding cultural difference around the world, it is an easy read. If you are available January 23 - 25, 2009, I would also recommend attending the conference that will be held here in Atlanta once again. |
